Instructions

Fizzy bath bombs are so much fun to make and even more fun to use, plus they make great homemade gifts.

To start, grab a large bowl and have your little one dump all of the dry ingredients in.  Since this recipe does not have to be exact, its ok if they make a few measuring mistakes along the way.  Also, this recipe can be pretty messy, so if you have the option to do it outside, I would highly recommend it!  Once you have added the baking soda, cornstarch, citric acid, and Epsom salt, mix them together thoroughly, trying to remove all of the clumps.  You can find citric acid on Amazon.  If you do not have Epsom salt available, you can omit it.

When your dry mixture is ready, grab a spray bottle, fill it with water, and add any food coloring that you choose (or don’t add any at all, it’s up to you!).  Because the boys selected orange oil for their bath bombs, we colored our water orange to match.     For the next step, it comes in handy to have two little helpers.  Using your spray bottle of colored water, lightly spritz the dry mixture while stirring.  You want to be careful not to add too much water at once or you will set off the fizzing reaction between the citric acid and baking soda.  You will see some fizzing along the way, and that’s ok!  You want to continue wetting the mixture until it looks like grainy sand, aim to keep t a little on the dry side.  If you make the mixture too wet, it will fizz right out of your mold, as we learned firsthand.  If you notice that your mixture is a little on the wet side, you can try adding some more cornstarch.

At this point, you have the option of adding essential oils.  Orange, lemon, lavender, eucalyptus, and peppermint all make wonderful additions, plus they each have their own benefits.  If you choose to add oils, place several drops into your mixture and stir to incorporate.

Eucalyptus- decongestant

Lavender- relaxation

Lemon, orange- energizing, uplifting

Peppermint- cooling, headache relief

Now that your mixture is finished, grab something that you could use as a mold.  We used a Minion Jell-O Jiggler tray, but you could use a muffin tin, icecube tray, silicon molds, plastic Easter eggs, Playdoh molds etc.…  Just like you would make a sand castle, press the mix into your mold.  If you successfully made the mixture dry enough, you should be able to pop the bath bomb out immediately.  This was easily the kids’ favorite part of the activity!  If you can, lay the bath bombs out to dry a bit before packing them into an airtight container.
